The BACP (The British Association For Counselling and Psychotherapy) definition of counselling
‘counselling takes place when a counsellor sees a client in a private confidential setting to explore a difficulty the client is having, distress they may be experiencing or perhaps dissatisfaction with their life, or loss, or sense of direction and purpose’

In counselling, clients are enabled to explore the various aspects of their life. By listening attentively the counsellor can begin to perceive the difficulties from the client’s point of view enabling them to see things more clearly and providing them with an opportunity to unravel the issues in a non judgemental supportive environment. This process will help the client to see things from a clearer less confused perspective. In turn this reduces confusion and encourages the client to take control and allow back some sense of direction in their lives.
Counsellors do not judge or exploit their clients in any way.
Maureen has spent a number of years counselling clients in the N.H.S. and voluntary sector. She has worked extensively with women who have suffered with post natal depression. This is a debilitating and distressing condition that if not recognised and treated fairly early on in its development may last for weeks months or years.
